Burnout Therapy for Women in Calgary
The Rest Isn't Working Anymore
You've tried resting. The long weekend, the earlier bedtime, the phone in the other room, and Monday you woke up exactly as depleted as Friday. Here's what the research actually says: burnout is not a gratitude deficiency. Psychologist Christina Maslach names it in three parts, emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and a collapsing sense of accomplishment, and studies using her framework find small average differences by gender, with women somewhat higher on exhaustion and men somewhat higher on cynicism. That is worth knowing mostly because exhaustion in women is so often read as a failure to cope rather than as a predictable response to load. Part of the reason lives outside the workplace: sociologist Allison Daminger's research on cognitive labor shows women disproportionately carry a household's invisible thinking work, and that labor is boundaryless. You can clock out of a job. There's no clocking out of noticing. That's why the weekend doesn't fix it — you never actually left work.

We map the actual load, not just your job, all of it: the noticing, the anticipating, the emotional management of other adults. Naming it is the first honest measurement of why you're exhausted. We treat the depletion itself: nervous system regulation, sleep and recovery work, and unhooking your worth from your output, because most burned-out women are running on a rule that says rest must be earned. Then we rebuild deliberately, what gets renegotiated, what gets dropped, and how to hold the boundaries that make it stick when the guilt shows up. We review it openly as we go, and when the work is done, we say so.
