Perinatal and Maternal Mental Health Therapy in Calgary

Everyone Asks About the Baby. We're Asking About You.

You are in very large company. Roughly one in seven to one in eight women experiences postpartum depression, and Statistics Canada's Survey on Maternal Health found that about one in four Canadian mothers reported symptoms consistent with postpartum depression or an anxiety disorder. Research, including a large British Columbia study of hundreds of new mothers, finds that unwanted, intrusive thoughts of harm coming to one's infant are reported by the overwhelming majority of new mothers. Having these thoughts is not a prediction or a danger sign, it's a near-universal feature of a postpartum brain wired for hypervigilant protection. You don't have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out for support for yourself.

Together we make space for the full experience of matrescence, the identity shift, the relationship changes, the pressure to have it all figured out. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy and Internal Family Systems (parts work), we work on the load, the sleep, and the expectations you inherited without agreeing to them. We start by naming what's actually going on, in plain language, not just 'baby blues.' From there we look at what's underneath: the identity shift of matrescence, the relationship changes, a nervous system adjusting to a new reality. Then we do the work together and take it back out into your life at home. We review progress openly, and when the work is done, we say so.
