How Much Does Therapy Cost in Calgary?
You should know the number before you book. Here it is, plus what most of it costs after insurance.
Free 15-minute consults are usually booked within 24 hours. Not a waitlist, not a callback queue. Nothing showing within 48 hours? Call or text 780-288-2074 or email info@truepaththerapy.ca and we will find you a time.
Most women we talk to have put off therapy at least once because of money, or because they couldn't find a straight answer about it. So this page gives you the straight answer: what therapy costs in Calgary in 2026, what we charge, what your benefits will probably cover, and what to do if the numbers don't work right now.
What does a therapy session cost in Calgary?
In Calgary, a 50-minute session with a registered psychologist usually costs $220 to $240. Most practices sit close to the fee schedule the Psychologists' Association of Alberta recommends. A session with a registered social worker or a counsellor usually costs $160 to $220, and that range is wider because training, experience and practice type vary more.
Longer sessions cost more. An 80- or 90-minute session is common for couples work and for some trauma work, and usually runs about one and a half times the 50-minute rate.
Alberta Health Care (AHCIP) does not cover private therapy with psychologists, social workers or counsellors. Your cost depends on your fee, your benefits and how often you go.

Why do psychologists and social workers charge different fees?
They are two different registered professions with different colleges. A Registered Provisional Psychologist is registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists and practises under the supervision of a registered psychologist. A Registered Social Worker is registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers. Both are trained to provide therapy.
The practical difference for you is usually your benefits. Some plans cover psychologists and social workers under one combined amount. Others cover only one, or give them separate amounts. Check which names your plan uses before you pick a clinician, and we'll help you match.
Will my benefits cover therapy?
Many extended health plans in Alberta cover psychology, social work or both, up to a yearly dollar amount. Plans vary a lot, so the quickest way to find out is to check your plan booklet or app for these three things:
-
Which professions are covered. Look for "psychologist", "registered social worker" or "mental health practitioner".
-
The yearly maximum. It's often a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars a year, and some plans pay a percentage per session.
-
Whether you need a doctor's referral. Most plans don't, but some do.
You get a receipt for every session, with your clinician's registration number on it. Direct billing may be available depending on your plan, so ask when you book and we'll check.
Can I claim therapy on my taxes?
Often, yes. In Alberta, fees paid to a psychologist or a social worker can count toward the federal medical expense tax credit (Canada Revenue Agency). That applies to the part your benefits didn't pay. Keep your receipts, and check with your accountant or tax software for your situation.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you're coming in for, and anyone who promises a number before meeting you is guessing. Some women come for a handful of sessions to get through a specific decision or stretch. Others work with us for months on patterns that took years to build. You and your therapist will talk about it early, and you can ask again at any point.
To help you plan, here is what a stretch of weekly or every-other-week sessions costs before benefits:
-
1 a month for 3 months: $570 with an RSW, $705 with a provisional psychologist
-
6 sessions: $1,140 with an RSW, $1,410 with a provisional psychologist
-
12 sessions: $2,280 with an RSW, $2,820 with a provisional psychologist
If your plan covers $1,000 a year, for example, six sessions with an RSW would cost you about $140 out of pocket.
Is a more expensive therapist a better therapist?
Not by price alone. The research on therapy outcomes keeps finding that the relationship between you and your therapist matters a great deal. That's why we offer a free consult. Use those 15 minutes to notice whether you feel heard and whether the person seems to understand what you're carrying. Then pick the fit you can afford to keep going with.
What if I can't afford therapy right now?
You still have options, and we would rather you use one than go without:
-
Calgary Counselling Centre sets fees on a sliding scale based on income.
-
Distress Centre Calgary offers free crisis support at 403-266-4357, 24 hours a day.
-
Health Link at 811 can connect you to Alberta Health Services mental health programs, which are publicly funded.
-
Your workplace EAP, if you have one, often covers a few free sessions. Check your benefits booklet.
If you're in crisis right now, call or text 988, or go to the nearest emergency department.
What happens if I need to cancel?
Life with kids, shifts and caregiving gets in the way, and we understand. Please give us at least 24 hours' notice when you can. For late cancellations, each clinician decides whether to charge the full fee, half, or nothing. We ask for a card on file to book sessions, but not to book the free consult.
